This Insurance Blind Spot Could Wreck Your DSP (Interview)

(But don’t worry—we've got the solution.)

This Insurance Blind Spot Could Wreck Your DSP

You’re solving route issues at 5 a.m., fielding driver calls at 9 p.m., and somewhere in between, pretending insurance is a once-a-year headache you’ll deal with... later.

But here’s the deal: most DSPs aren’t just underprepared for an insurance crisis—they’re wide open to it.

I sat down with Steve Binnig, producer at OVD Final Mile, to talk through the biggest insurance blind spots we see every day. What he shared should make every DSP sit up a little straighter.

The $250K Mistake You Don’t Know You’re Making

“EPLI—Employment Practices Liability Insurance—is the one nobody talks about until they’re in deep trouble,” Steve told me.

It’s not cargo damage. It’s not a multi-vehicle collision. It’s a driver claiming discrimination. A former employee alleging wrongful termination. A harassment complaint.

“Last year, the average EPLI lawsuit cost over $250,000,” Steve said. “And most DSPs don’t have the coverage—or the savings—to survive that hit.”

The worst part? Most owners don’t even realize it’s a gap until it’s too late.

Why Amazon DSPs Are Getting Hammered on Auto Insurance

As DSPs, we’ve all noticed the painful uptick in auto insurance costs. And if you're running under Amazon, you're probably paying a lot more than your FedEx counterparts.

Here’s why — “It’s about authority,” Steve explained. “FedEx ISPs operate under FedEx’s DOT number. Amazon DSPs operate under their own. And in insurance, liability follows the authority.”

That means when something goes wrong, you own it—not Amazon. And the premiums reflect that.

Worse? Most DSPs didn’t know this when they signed up. The result: insurance rates that feel like they’re growing faster than your business.

What is Making DSP Insurance So Expensive

The Fix You Can Actually Control

Insurance may feel like a black box, but there are smart, proactive moves you can make—today—that change the game.

Start with continuous MVR monitoring.

“Most DSPs run an MVR check before hiring a driver. But what happens three months later? Six months? You’re blind,” Steve said.

Continuous monitoring alerts you to tickets, DUIs, or violations in real time. It gives you the chance to act before something spirals into a claim.

“It’s cheap, it’s effective, and it makes underwriters pay attention,” he added. “If you want better rates, start with better visibility.”

Story Beats Spreadsheet Every Time

Here’s where Steve and I really align: if you want to stand out in today’s insurance market, you need to tell a better story.

Not fluff. Not spin. Just clear, credible documentation.

“Show your loss history—yes—but also what you did about it. What changed? What did you learn?” Steve said.

Even better? Hand over your onboarding process, employee handbook, safety meeting schedule, retraining plans.

“Most DSPs don’t do this. So the ones that do? They stand out instantly.”
